Our Beliefs

CBF of Roxborough Doctrinal Statement
“In necessariis unitas, in non-necessariis libertas, in omnibus caritas.” (Meldenius, 17th Century)
“In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity.”

The Bible, both Old and New Testaments, though written by men, were supernaturally inspired by God so that all its words are the written true revelation of God; it is therefore inerrant and infallible in the originals and authoritative for faith and life. It is to be understood with the help of the Holy Spirit, its meaning determined by the historical, grammatical, and literary use of the author’s language, comparing Scripture with Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Matthew 5:18, 28:19; John 16:12-13).
We believe in one God who eternally exists in three equal persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We believe that God has always been and always will be. He is all-powerful, all knowing, all present and unchanging. He is a God of love, but also a perfect God who cannot ignore sin (Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 3:13-17, 2 Corinthians 13:14).
God the Father is the first person of the Trinity and is the designer of creation, the speaker of revelation, the author of salvation, and the sovereign of history. The Father is to be worshiped, led “by the Spirit” and through the Son (1 Corinthians 8:6, John 3:17, 5:23).
The Lord Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity. He is God. He was conceived by the virgin Mary through a miracle of the Holy Spirit. He lives forever as perfect God and perfect man: united in one person (John 1:1-2, 14; Luke 1:35; Colossians 1:15-18).
We believe that the Holy Spirit came in a special sense on the Day of Pentecost, indwelling every believer. In this age, the Holy Spirit carries out the ministries of restraining evil in the world; convicting people of sin, righteousness, and judgment; regenerating and indwelling all believers; baptizing them into the Body of Christ; sealing them unto the day of redemption; and empowering them for sanctification and service.

We believe that some gifts of the Holy Spirit are permanent and are intended for use throughout the entire Church Age. Other gifts were temporary and were given in the Apostolic Age for the purpose of founding the church. These include the gifts of apostleship, prophecy, miracles, healings, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues. At the same time, we affirm that God still performs miracles as He wills (John 14:16–17; 16:7–15; Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 6:19; 12:13, 28–30; Ephesians 2:20-22; 4:1-16, 30; Hebrews 2:1-4; Titus 3:5).

Humanity was created in the image of God, perfect and without sin, male & female. Adam, the first man, willfully disobeyed God, bringing sin and death into the world. As a result, all persons are sinners from conception, which is evidenced in their willful acts of sin. They are therefore subject to eternal punishment and separation from Holy God, and in need of a Savior (Genesis 1:26-27, Romans 3:22-23, 5:12; Ephesians 2:1-3, 12).
Jesus Christ fulfilled the demands of God the Father by His obedient life, died on the cross in full substitution and payment for the sins of all, was buried, and on the third day He arose physically and bodily from the dead. He ascended into heaven where He now intercedes for all believers. Each person can be saved only through the work of Jesus Christ, by faith alone in Him as Savior. The believer is declared righteous, born again by the Holy Spirit, turned from sin, and assured of heaven and cannot lose his salvation (John 1:10-13; John 3:1-18, Acts 4:12, Romans 3:21-26; Ephesians 1-7, 2:8-9; 1 Peter 1:18-19, 3:18).
There will be a resurrection for all of humanity, the saved unto the resurrection of eternal life and the lost unto the resurrection of eternal punishment (Daniel 12:1-2, John 14:2-3, 1 Corinthians 15:51-52, 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10, 4:15-17; Revelation 20:12-14).
We believe that the Church includes all those everywhere in the world who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, Christ is the Head of the Church, called His Body. The local church is a body of believers in Christ who are joined together under scriptural leadership for the worship of God, for edification through the Word of God, for prayer, for fellowship, for the proclamation of the Gospel, and for observance of the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 16:16–18; Acts 1:4-5; 2:42–47; 11:15-16; Romans 12:5; Ephesians 1:20–23; Philippians 1:1; 1 Corinthians 12:13; 1 Timothy 3:15).
We believe that the return of Christ will be personal and could happen at any time (imminent), therefore we must be ready.

We believe Jesus Christ will return to rapture the Church Age saints, followed by the tribulation period, and the visible return of Jesus Christ with His saints for His millennial reign on earth. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and unjust, in the reward and everlasting conscious blessedness of the just, and in the judgment and everlasting conscious punishment of the lost. (Luke 16:19–26; John 11:25; 1 Corinthians 15:51-57; 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; Revelation 20:1–15; 21:1–8).

We believe marriage has been ordained by God. This church defines “marriage” as the exclusive covenantal union of one man and one woman in which such union is a lifetime commitment (Genesis 2:18-24; Matthew 19:4-6; Ephesians 5:31).

We believe that legitimate sexual relations are exercised solely within marriage. Hence, sexual activities outside of marriage (referred to in the New Testament as “porneia”) including but not limited to, adultery, premarital sex, homosexuality, and pedophilia are inconsistent with the teaching of the Bible and the Church. Further, lascivious conduct, transgender behavior, and the creation and/or distribution and/or viewing of pornography are incompatible with the biblical witness (Hebrews 13:4; Romans 1:24-27; Ephesians 5:3-5; Leviticus18:6-21, 23; Matthew 5:28).
